NAWASA was formed with the responsibility of the production and distribution of portable water and the responsibility for the production and distribution of sewerage. In 1969 Water Works formalized into what was called the Central Water Commission (CWC) that was solely responsible for water production and distribution. In 1990 the responsibility of sewer collection and disposal, which was under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, was passed unto NAWASA. This was in keeping with global trends and the technical resources available in NAWASA to manage this activity.
